This cool Japanese poster depicting the iconic Torii Gate that juts out of the sea at Hiroshima Miyajima is designed by Pieter Irwin Brown. Irwin Brown was a European artist who contributed to the shin hanga movement during the 1930's. He lived in Kyoto, Japan for several years.
Born in Rotterdam of Dutch and Irish parentage, Pieter studied art from childhood, first with a private tutor and later at the local art school, before entering studies at the Royal Academy in Amsterdam.
The poster is issued by the Japanese Government Railways, which disbanded in 1949. The poster has some dirt and foxing at top. Otherwise in great condition.
